Engaged, now what?

Engaged, now what?

Getting married is a dream come true for most people, but planning the wedding….. that’s completely different, a nightmare in some cases. We’re all about stress-free here at Windy Ridge so we’ve come up with this handy little checklist of steps to kick off the wedding planning process.

Yahoo! I’m engaged, now what?

Step 1. Write the guest list!

Write down the list of people you think you would invite. This is important because when it comes to choosing your venue, there may be restrictions on the size the venue can hold or the minimum guest numbers the venue caters for. Always write it down as you may be surprised just how many people it is when its written down!

Step 2. Decide on the time of year you’d like to get married

Do you have a preference? Do you want it to be a warm summery day or do you prefer the moodier feel that a winters day can bring or are you flexible? Pricing will vary depending on time of year, day of the week and year that you choose.

Engaged, now what?

Step 3. Choose some Venues to view

The first thing you need to book is your venue. You cannot book any other vendors or invite people until you have a date set in stone.
Most venues will have set times to view or viewing is by appointment. Contact the venue/s you’d like to visit and arrange a time to visit. You will need to have done step 1 and step 2 above so they can provide you with relevant information. If possible, provide the information upon booking the viewing as your date (if you have one in mind) may not be available or they may not be able to cater to your guest numbers (you may have too many or not enough) and that may eliminate that venue immediately and save you time.

Step 3. What to ask at the viewing

Some people have a firm idea of what they want in their wedding from the style and theme to the order of the day. Keep an open mind when viewing as not all styles and themes will suit every venue but in every other aspect that venue might be perfect.
There are many obvious questions to ask, here’s a list of some of the least common but important things to ask when visiting the venue:

Are there set start and end times
What time do you close
What happens if it rains
Do you provide decorations and am I allowed to bring my own? Are there any restrictions on decorations?
What are the beverage options available, BYO, running a TAB
Do you have a sound system with a microphone for ceremony and reception
What kind of support do you provide during the wedding planning stage and on the day
Do you have an testimonials
What is the deposit and booking process

Once you have made a decision on the venue, book it! Don’t delay, as venues book up quickly and often 12 – 18 months in advance.

Step 4. Write a to do list and tick things off 1 by 1

Once you have booked your venue, write a list of vendors to book (photographer, celebrant, DJ/band, make up artists etc…) then start researching. Ask family and friends for referrals. Your venue should be able to help you with this. Lock in those key vendors as soon as you can then everything should fall into place from there.
